Every winter I make a personal vow: I do NOT do outside this time of year.
Cold, darkness at 4 PM, and icy parking lots are usually my cue to stay wrapped in a blanket indoors.

But then I visited Ice Castles New Hampshire… and suddenly winter didn’t seem quite so terrible.

If you’re wondering whether Ice Castles in Lincoln, New Hampshire is worth the trip, here’s what it’s actually like.

The Ice Sculptures Are Seriously Impressive

Photos don’t quite capture the scale of the ice formations.

The entire attraction is built from thousands of icicles that are hand-placed and frozen together to create towering frozen walls, archways, and glowing caverns.

At night, colorful lights are embedded inside the ice, turning the entire space into something that feels a little like wandering through a frozen fantasy world.

Think less “snow pile” and more real-life ice palace.

Exploring the Caves Is the Best Part

One of the coolest surprises is that you’re not just looking at the ice structures. You’re actually walking through them.

Inside the castle you’ll find:

• winding ice tunnels
• glowing caves
• frozen archways
• hidden corners that feel like secret passageways

Kids especially love exploring these areas, but honestly… adults get just as excited.

There Are Ice Slides Too

Because apparently someone looked at a castle made of ice and thought:

“You know what this needs? Slides.”

And they were absolutely correct.

The ice slides add a playful element that makes the experience feel more interactive instead of just a walk-through attraction.

It’s More Than Just the Castle

Another thing that surprised me was how much there is outside the main structure.

The experience also includes:

• a lighted walking trail
snow tubing
hot beverages and snacks
• Horse drawn Sleigh Rides (additional cost)

Altogether it creates a full winter outing instead of a quick photo stop.

The Whole Experience Is a Winter Mood

IIf you live in New England, winter can feel like a long stretch of gray skies and cold days.

Ice Castles somehow turns that into something magical.

Between the glowing ice formations, the snowy paths, and warm drinks in hand, the entire place feels like a little winter festival tucked into the mountains.

It’s honestly a great way to make the most of the cold and the lack of sunlight instead of hiding from it.

Nerdy Mom Tips

Visit after sunset if you can.

The LED lights inside the ice formations come alive at night, and the castles glow with shifting colors that make the whole experience feel even more magical.

Just dress warmer than you think you need…Layers (if you’re active you may need to shed) Ice castles are beautiful… but they are still very much made of ice. ❄️

Accessibility is limited! The snow becomes very loose, squishy, and challenging to walk in for anyone, let alone for those with mobility challenges. Some paths are easier than others but, you may want to skip it if you feel like you would be disappointed missing a lot. The sleigh ride may be an option to still get a magical ride with views. For the best information, call ahead for your options.

Secure tickets online several days in advance. We wanted to go the previous weekend but found all the evening times to be sold out! Be aware that the last 2 weeks of February are vacation times for New England schools and these weeks tend to sell out quicker.

Is Ice Castles Worth It?

If you enjoy unique seasonal experiences, the answer is yes.

Ice Castles creates a winter attraction that feels part art installation, part playground, and part winter festival.

Even someone like me, who normally avoids the outdoors in winter, had to admit:

It’s a whole vibe.
