Don’t Buy Universal’s Photo Package Until You Read This

Some of the best moments on a Universal Orlando vacation happen when you’re too busy screaming on a roller coaster to take a picture.

From your child’s first big coaster to an unexpected velociraptor encounter, those spontaneous reactions often become the memories you treasure most. Capturing those big belly laughs, terrified ride faces, and family adventures can help preserve those core memories long after you’ve returned home.

But is the Universal Orlando Photo Package actually worth the extra cost?

In this My Universal Photos review, we’ll break down the pricing, benefits, drawbacks, and tips for getting the most value so you can decide whether it’s the right add-on for your next Universal Orlando vacation.

What Is My Universal Photos?

My Universal Photos is Universal Orlando’s in-park photography service. Professional photographers and ride cameras capture moments throughout Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Volcano Bay, and Epic Universe.

Instead of purchasing individual photos, guests can buy a package that includes unlimited digital downloads from participating photo locations, along with one complimentary 4×6 print and one 5×7 print.

Photos can be accessed through the Amazing Pictures app or online after your visit.

When you purchase the package, you’ll receive a card with a QR code that photographers can scan throughout the parks. Simple, quick, and easy to carry on a lanyard.

Universal Orlando Photo Package Pricing

Current pricing (plus tax) is approximately:

  • 1-Day Package: $95.84
  • 3-Day Package: $117.14 (consecutive days required)
  • 5-Day Package: $138.44 (consecutive days required)
  • Annual Pass: $159.99 (often discounted for Annual Passholders)
  • Volcano Bay 1-Day Package: $39.99
  • Individual Photo Download + Print: $26

Since individual photos cost around $26 each, many families break even after just four or five photo downloads. If you’re planning to ride several attractions and stop for a few family photos, it’s surprisingly easy to get your money’s worth. *Pricing is always subject to change and included here for guidance purposes only.

What We Love About My Universal Photos

1. The Universal Ride Photos Are Pure Gold

Whether it’s a wide-eyed VelociCoaster launch, your first trip through Revenge of the Mummy, or the realization that sitting in the front row on Jurassic Park River Adventure may have been a questionable life choice, ride photos capture reactions you simply can’t recreate.

Some of our favorite vacation memories aren’t the posed photos. They’re the moments where everyone is laughing, screaming, or making faces they didn’t know were possible.

Once you learn where the cameras are, the fun shifts from genuine terror to creative posing competitions.

2. Parents Get to Be in the Picture

Let’s be honest. Parents often end up as the family photographer.

You spend the entire vacation taking photos of everyone else, only to get home and realize there are barely any pictures proving you were actually there.

The Universal Orlando Photo Package solves that problem by putting everyone in the frame together. Family vacations happen once. It’s nice to have evidence that you participated in them.

3. Fun Selfie Stations and Themed Backgrounds

One of the most underrated features of My Universal Photos is the variety of themed photo opportunities throughout the parks.

You’ll find holiday displays, seasonal setups, green screen experiences, and iconic props that add a little extra storytelling to your vacation album.

Some of my personal favorites include:

  • The Raptor Encounter photos
  • The DeLorean photo opportunity
  • Seasonal holiday backdrops
  • The green screen experiences at Shutterbutton’s in Diagon Alley

These often create some of the funniest and most memorable photos from the trip.

4. Epic Universe Adds More Photo Opportunities

One common complaint guests have had over the years is that Universal didn’t have enough photographers compared to other theme parks.

During visits to Epic Universe, we’ve noticed significantly more photographers throughout the park, particularly near the portals and major landmarks. The additional coverage makes it easier to take advantage of your package and capture more professional photos throughout the day.

Potential Downsides of the Universal Orlando Photo Package

1. Fewer Photographers Than Disney

If you’re familiar with Disney’s photo services, it’s important to set realistic expectations.

Universal has fewer photographers overall. You’ll typically find them near park entrances, character experiences, select landmarks, and designated photo locations rather than around every corner.

That doesn’t make the package less valuable, but it does require a little more effort to seek out opportunities.

2. The App Experience Isn’t Perfect

Photos are accessed through the Amazing Pictures system rather than directly through the Universal Orlando app.

The process works, but it isn’t as seamless as some guests might expect. If you forget to scan your QR code at a photo location, you may miss out on images that would otherwise be included.

3. Multi-Day Packages Must Be Used Consecutively

The 3-day and 5-day packages require consecutive use days.

If you’re planning resort days, water park breaks, or time off between park visits, this can reduce the value of the package. In some cases, frequent visitors may find the annual photo pass offers better value.

4. How It Compares to Disney Memory Maker

Compared to Disney’s Memory Maker, Universal’s photo package is generally less expensive, but it also offers fewer photographer locations and special effects like Magic Shots.

Disney provides more comprehensive photo coverage, while Universal delivers a more budget-friendly option focused heavily on ride photos and select professional photo locations.

Both have value. The better choice depends on your travel style.

So, Is the Universal Orlando Photo Package Worth It?

The short answer?

For many families, yes.

The Universal Orlando Photo Package is especially worth considering if you:

  • Plan to visit for multiple consecutive park days
  • Love collecting ride photos
  • Want professional family photos throughout your trip
  • Visit Universal regularly and can benefit from the annual pass option
  • Prefer being present in the moment instead of constantly managing your phone

You may want to skip it if you:

  • Only want a handful of photos
  • Are spending just one day in the parks
  • Don’t plan to ride many attractions
  • Expect photographer coverage comparable to Disney

Tips for Getting the Most Value from My Universal Photos

Want to maximize your investment? Here are my favorite tips:

Wear Your Photo Card

Keep your photo card on a lanyard for easy access. Photographers can quickly scan it, and you’ll be more likely to remember to use it.

Know the Best Photo Locations

Some of the best photo opportunities include:

  • Park entrance landmarks
  • Raptor Encounter
  • Character meet-and-greets
  • The Dark Room in Universal Studios Florida
  • Shutterbutton’s in Diagon Alley
  • Epic Universe portal areas

Scan Everything

Whenever a photographer offers a photo opportunity, scan your card. It’s better to have extra photos than regret missing one later.

Activate Your Package Early

Photos that aren’t linked promptly may disappear from the system. Activate your package and start using it as soon as possible.

Address Missing Photos Quickly

If something doesn’t show up, visit Guest Services right away. In my experience, they’re often able to help recover missing images.

Purchase Before You Travel

Pre-purchasing is often less expensive than buying the package inside the parks, and it can help spread out vacation costs before your trip.

Final Thoughts

If you love ride photos, candid moments, and having proof that you actually existed on your family vacation instead of living permanently behind the camera, My Universal Photos is a worthwhile investment.

Is it perfect? No. Universal still doesn’t have as many photographers as some other theme parks, and you’ll need to be proactive about scanning your card and seeking out photo opportunities.

But if you’re planning multiple park days, riding the major attractions, meeting characters, or simply want everyone in the picture together, the package can easily pay for itself while capturing some of your favorite vacation memories.

My family has collected everything from terrified VelociCoaster faces to perfectly timed splash-down reactions, and those photos have become some of our favorite souvenirs.
